A Unique Approach for
Survivors of Domestic Violence
Serving Our Community
Since 1996
Victims of domestic violence face a myriad of legal issues
ranging from the loss of custody of their children to evictions
from their homes to being wrongfully arrested for the abuse
perpetrated against them. However, the legal issues faced by
immigrant battered women often have the most oppressive
effects. Fearing deportation and leaving their children behind
with their abusers, many immigrant women opt to stay in their
abusive relationships.

Recognizing this, SPCLS has partnered with Rainbow Services, a
provider of support services for victims of domestic violence, to
create a model project which addresses the needs of survivors
and in particular, immigrant survivors. This project utilizes a
three-prong approach: offer a wide range of direct legal services,
develop customized safety plans and strategies to keep
survivors and their children safe, and provide survivors with the
resources and social services they need to lead violence-free
lives.
More than 90% of SPCLS’ clients are
recent immigrants from a number of
Latin American countries
including Mexico, El Salvador,
Puerto Rico, Cuba, Nicaragua,
Guatemala, Peru, and Brazil.
