Creating Broad Changes
Serving Our Community
Since 1996
During the course of serving our clients, we
often find that truly effective representation
requires creating new laws or advocating for
changes in administrative policies. Through
our Policy and Legislative Advocacy Project,
we seek to address systemic barriers that
prevent our clients from being able to access
the legal justice system. In particular, SPCLS
strives to analyze the impact each new law or
policy will have on monolingual
Spanish-speaking, immigrant battered
women. Since its inception, SPCLS has
developed an expertise in legislative analysis
and coalition building, working with a
diverse group of advocates to monitor,
evaluate and draft new policies and
legislation. The Project has been and
continues to be inspired by the ongoing
obstacles faced by our clients.
In 1998, Laurie
Cambra Seplow
was instrumental in
drafting cutting-edge
legislation that
created new
protections and
custody rights for
unmarried victims of
domestic violence.
